DEMAND EXCEEDS SUPPLY
What may sound like an economic report actually describes my nature photography class Birds of Prey Photo Safari. Last month’s class sold out, so I repeated it this past weekend. Once again, photographers flocked to it. Temperatures were mild. The light was great. Everyone had fun capturing a number of excellent images. We photographed eagles, falcons, and owls (oh, my!) … eight different species in all. As the handlers brought the different raptors out from the aviary, you would hear the...

This past weekend I led a photography workshop in Cape May, NJ. Spring is a wonderful time of year to photograph this historic seaside resort. At dawn and dusk the sun paints the sky, surf, and sand with brilliant colors. Gardens blossom and bloom, and hanging baskets of flowers adorn many a porch and lamppost. The entire town is a National Historic Landmark, and its rich diversity of Victorian architecture keeps your camera’s shutter release busy. Throughout the day the iconic Cape May Point...

This past weekend I led a bird photography training session at a local state park. Participants got to see and photograph eagles, falcons, hawks, and owls in natural habitat settings. It is an incredible experience simply being in such close proximity to these magnificent creatures. When I snapped a quick photo of the group, I suddenly thought of my friend Jeff Wendorff, bird photographer extraordinaire. Jeff has fun telling folks the collective noun for various bird groupings, such as a...

For the past week or two, I set aside most things photography-related (and all house chores) because I have been busy watching our grandchildren each day. It will take another few weeks for our daughter to find a new nanny. No matter what the type of photography I am pursuing at the moment (nature, cityscapes, special events, etc.), a big part of the fun is the thrill of the hunt … tracking down something new. Saturday I had a few hours free (woo-hoo!) and decided to see what new graffiti...

Last month’s raptor photo shoot reached its maximum capacity, and a waiting list developed. To meet the demand for this exciting wildlife photography program, I have scheduled a second Birds of Prey Photo Safari for Saturday, April 27, 2013. Here is your chance to photograph various species of eagles, hawks, and owls in natural settings. You provide the camera, and I provide hands-on, in-the-field instruction on how to capture stunning images of these magnificent creatures. I have scheduled...

Freight cars crisscross North America on a regular basis, and train artists and writers use them as canvases to send their artwork out across the country. This week I watched several freight trains move between the Locust Point Rail Yard and Gwynns Falls Road here in Baltimore. Graffiti adorned many of the freight cars, and I was able to capture a number of colorful images as the trains clacked along the tracks. Intriguing is how I would describe the variety of designs, the simplicity and the...
